I’ve been talking to a lot of people lately who are struggling with their weight. They feel like no matter what they’re doing, their weight is going up and down like a yo-yo. I can completely relate because I’ve been there. I can remember a time where my weight and what I ate felt like an obsession.
My diet is still evolving. The place where I am now is not where I started. Making small changes has been key to finding what works for me. I started cutting dairy out of my diet 4.5 years ago, when I found out my son had a dairy allergy. I noticed a big difference right away. I lost my baby weight and felt a positive shift with my digestion. I rarely ever feel bloated since cutting out dairy. How to get the most Nutrients from your Food
After cutting dairy out of my diet, I read a book called “Super Life” by Darin Olien. This book completely opened my eyes to what a healthy diet really looks like. Besides an occasional salad, I was barely eating any raw vegetables. I realized I was cooking almost all my vegetables and losing a lot of the nutrients. I also learned that from the time a fruit or vegetable is picked within hours, it will start losing some of its nutritional value. It loses even more from day three to day six and so on. I realized my vegetables have already lost quite a bit of its nutritional value from the time it’s picked until the time it gets to me and then I’m cooking them. I’m getting very little nutritional value from my food.
I started becoming more aware of where my fruits and vegetables are coming from, by simply checking labels. I was really shocked that most organic produce is coming from other countries. Which means it’s probably taking even longer to get to me from the time it’s picked. I always try to find local organic produce. If that’s not possible, I try to find produce grown in the United States.
Why I Eat Raw Meals
My goal is to have at least one raw meal a day. Sometimes that’s a smoothie in the morning or a salad for lunch. When you are eating nutritious food, you don’t have to worry about counting calories. When you cut processed foods out of your diet, it’s much easier to listen to your body. I eat intuitively now. When I feel hungry I eat, when I’m full, I stop. I rarely ever have sweet cravings, but when I do I eat something sweet. Food isn’t in control of me anymore.
How to get a Variety of Micronutrients
Another fun fact I learned from Darin’s book is how important it is to have a variety of food. I was guilty of always buying the same brand of my favorite organic kale or frozen blueberries. Different soils contain different micronutrients our bodies need. If you’re always buying the same brand, you aren’t getting a variety of micronutrients. Try to switch up brands when you can.
Start with small changes. You never know what doors might open. Thanks for reading. Sending you lots of love and healing.
